'spotted sub, sank same" was a message from an anti-sub blimp. I was 8 
years old when Pearl Harbor was bombed. There was a great deal of 
military action on and over Long Island, where we lived. Armed Coast 
Guardsmen patrolled the beaches, B-17s flew patrols at 50 feet around 
Long Island. There were artillery spotting towers (kind of like fire 
towers only taller) along the coast.

     I suspect the RAV were in a few long range patrol airships in 1940-41.
