Fascinating discussion!
BTW, Gordon, It was Port Lyautey, Morocco. It was later renamed to
Kenitra Naval Air Station, after Morocco gained independence and they
wanted to scrub the French influence. One of the squadrons I served in
(VR-24), had been located there and later moved to Rota, Spain.

I was briefly in Libya as a reporter in 1959, at Sidi Slimane, I
think a US or NATO B-47 base at the time, shortly after the Lady Be Good
was found and it was the talk of the base. I would have liked to fly out
to the site, but I was assigned to a Navy R4D-A which was not allowed to
take sight-seeing diversions. Went from there to Port Lauyte (sp?) in
Morocco.
