One thing that has always bothered me about the LBG incident was why did
they all bail out?
Was the B-24 so dangerous in a water landing that no one could have gotten
out of it?
When found, three of the props were feathered, indicating, obviously, that
they were very dangerously low on fuel.
>From what I have read about this incident over the years, I concluded that
the entire crew was really too green to even have attempted the mission,
especially alone.
They ALL made terrible mistakes.
Heading north, when they should have been heading south. After all, they
had a map. Not trying to find the plane which SHOULD have continued on in
the direction it was flying when they left it, etc.
Then there was the matter of one of the crew's parachutes malfunctioning,
killing him on impact. How common was such a malfunction? Not very, I
would assume.
BTW, I remember reading about the LBG when it was first found and had
come to the attention of the various news media. I have been fascinated by it
ever since.
