I did mean to add that my preferred technique works if and only if  (IFF) 
the can's metal is still malleable.  And even then if you open it a little 
bit at a time, making several circuits around the diameter.  When it works, it 
does have the advantage that if you do it and the device still doesn't 
work, you can take another shot at it.
