[ARC5] Reviving squealing "command" receivers (re-capping)

It's worth the effort to be sure which caps are bad, rather than
just "shotgunning" them. The 5 mFd B+ filter is always "bad"
and gives trouble over about 40-50 volts B+.
Just clip the lead to the can. Follow the wire to the other end
and solder a modern replacement at the wire's tie point
to ground. Same thing with the 15 mFd cathode bypass.
The modern replacement for that is about the size of a
pencil eraser and can go at the tube base.
A surprising amount of the other caps will be good,
especially if you run reduced B+.
When I do re-stuff a can, I use a cheap copper pipe
cutter I got from the plumbing section of Home Despot.
It's the kind you crank down on the pipe, rotate it around,
tighten it, rotate again and repeat until the pipe cuts.
Looks sorta like this one:

but not so fancy ;-)

Don't get in a hurry and warp the can.
Works great and will cut it under the lip.
Clean out the glop, polish the edges, restuff and solder
the lid back on. If you use a good iron and get it smooth,
you can hardly tell.
