Which brings up an excellent point: rather than reinvent the wheel,
why not simply use a good, already-built, VFO?
For instance, Heathkit LMOs which were used in the SB rigs are often
available on eBay for around $15.00.
A 6BE6 oscillator/mixer with input from the VFO at 5 - 5.5 Mhz, and a
3.5 Mhz crystal, would give you output over the 1.5 to 2.0 Mhz range
with very adequate stability and linear frequency readout.
Power requirements would be minimal, as would the time and energy
involved.
