The story as I remember it went something like this:
A boy from way back in the hills somewhere left home, went to college
and majored in Electrical Engineering. His father was very proud of
him inasmuch as simply graduating from grade school was an uncommon
achievement in those parts. Accordingly, the family held a party for
him at Christmas break and invited all their friends and neighbors.
During the course of the celebration and in front of all the guests
the proud father said "son, say something in Engineering." Caught by
surprise the kid blurts out, "er.... Pi R squared"-- and everyone
bursts out laughing.
After the party the father angrily confronts his son. "I have never
been so embarrassed in my life! Pie are square? Everybody knows pie
are round.... CORNBREAD are square. This is what the teach you at
that expensive school?!"
