The VHF receivers also were tunable and I think these are what Dave was
refering to.  

The BFO was present in some postwar LF/MF nav receivers and not present in
others like ARC's offerings, at least up to the Type 21 ADF.  (I don't know
about Cessna-era ARC equipment, though I should.)
