I have a couple of sets, one Russian the other Japanese war  time and they 
run happily on just 5 x  9v batteries in series. Its amazing  just what can 
be achieved with low volts, hi. 
 
I have two 3 rack rx's and a 2 rack rx and 2 rack tx setup  running though 
on mains powered supplies. Like you I too will one day get around  to making 
it all run off 12v.
