One thing I have never understood about those units is the low value of 
listed power output: 12 watts on CW and 4 watts on Phone.

I know that on later models, that power output was raised to at least twice 
that value on the attached labels.

What was the reason for the very low power output? Was it the capability of 
the primary power system, the dynamotor, the modulator, or what?

It just seemed weird to me that with the final amps being built of two 75 watt 
tubes (CW), the power output should be so low. Even given that the military 
needs complete reliability, this seems to be overdoing it more than just a 
little.
