I agree that an external transformer is best as it involves no changes to
the radio. Most of my receivers have the 4000 ohm output and I've found
that the common All-American-Five AF output transformer does a decent job as
the impedance is about right. Some of them come rivited to the speaker
frame so you can conveniently use the combo as a single unit. Plenty of
those old AM radios lying around.
