Another way of looking at US Army during the 1930s radios is the following:

The Army recognized 3 types of aircraft radios. The first type the
"command set" was operated by the pilot and had a range of about
3 miles. Example SCR-AA-183. The second type the "liaison set" was
a long range type operated by an enlisted person, who also probably
operated a machine gun, Example SCR-187 . The third type was a
navigation radio covering 200kc to 400kc and maybe 500kc to 1500kc.
Sometimes using a loop antenna. Example if I remember correctly, the
SCR-AA-185 and or SCR-AA-186. These sets used the receiver from
the SCR-AA-183 and were equiped with a loop antenna.
