Hi Henry:

Modulation System by Robert E. Taylor:
http://www.google.com/patents/about?id=ILlqAAAAEBAJ&dq=2282347
uses seperate circuits for positive and negative half cycles and claims
to be efficient.

A simple way to get a higher level of AM modulation is to use negative
cycle loading. You make a circuit consisting of a resistor and diode in
series. The diode needs to have a breakdown voltage well above the peak
plate voltage (including modulation peaks). The circuit is connected
between the modulation stage tube plate and ground with a polarity such
that it clamps the negative going peaks. This way when you approach
over modulation (and normally get clipping of the negative half cycles)
the loading reduces the negative going half cycles the allowing more
modulation without clipping. This was used by Art W6TYP (now a SK).

Have Fun,
