Jess,
Yeah, I know that from bitter experience and would never build a rectifying circuit fed directly from the line,
whatever the continent --- I have a feeling this thread is going off on a strange but entertaining tangent ;0)
Some of the classical All American 5'(?)s tube sets operated without isolation transformers but were enclosed
in bakelite or wooden cabinets -- but pity the guy that got hold of a tuning or volume shaft minus the plastic knob.
I was just trying to emphasize that no one in this discussion at all was seriously suggesting tapping directly
off the AC line and definitely not suggesting doing so. Some clown once sold me a TCS receiver powered directly
from the 220 V AC line w/o warning me i.e the chassis was hot depending on which way the line cord was
plugged in !-- I always check that kind of thing before applying line voltage.

Henry,
Hams in the US, are leery of rectifying DIRECTLY the 115 or 220 VAC Mains. Unlike Europe, the low side of the line (Neutral) is connected directly to ground. If you work directly with the "mains" without isolation, you suffer the real danger of serious electrical shock or possibly electrocution.
