Looks a lot like amber shellac, a.k.a. orange-tinted shellac, though
it lacks the sheen. Maybe thinned? This was the finish of choice
slathered onto the finished woodwork in many a home of that time
period. The old place I just moved out of was loaded with it, and I
refinished a mirror for the front foyer to match it with the current
stuff. Almost indistinguishable. The only down side was - while the
plain shellac was available in gallons, the amber stuff was only
available in pints. A bit pricey for big jobs, but perfect for a
junction box. Think it was Bulls Eye.

Just a guess to add to the mix.
