>It looks like, during WW2, the P-51 and the P-47 had a VHF homing system

And that system was what??? The P-47 and -51 were USAAF aircraft, and
the only VHF homing system that was available was the USN ZB/YE-YG
system. The ZB was acquired by the USAAF as the AN/ARR-1, and was the
only reason for the BC-946-B broadcast band receiver to be added so
late to the SCR-274-N. The ground beacon transmitter used by the
USAAF seems to have been USN stock YE or YG sets.

But...there doesn't appear to have been use of this homing system by
the USAAF except in the Pacific Theatre of Operations (PTO), and that
use appears to have been sparse. It would seem logical for some USAAF
PTO fighter aircraft to have added the AN/ARR-1 to their SCR-274-N
sets, where the BC-946-B would replace the BC-453-B in the receiver
racks. However, I've never seen any *actual* documentation of this.

In contrast, I have several "-1" flight operating instruction manuals for
the B-29, -29A, and -29B that cover use of the AN/ARR-1. Except for the
BC-453-B beacon band set, these aircraft had discarded the SCR-274-N
HF command set for the VHF AN/ARC-3. The AN/ARR-1 fed its broadcast band
output to the AN/ARN-7 ADF instead of a BC-946-B. These aircraft were
used primarily in the PTO.

"Detrola", but specifically the Detrola Model 438, or the BC-1206-A, -B,
or the slightly different BC-1206-C, -D by Setchell-Carlson and others.
