It is really surprising that the set would be shipped with the tubes
and DM-28-P NOT installed in the receiver.  The BC-348 unpacking
and installation manuals that I've seen say nothing about installing
those items, yet often have micro-detail statements like "Open both
ends of the box for the mounting...".

That would seem logical for a receiver intended for replacement
purposes rather than for first-time installation of an SCR-287-A
or AN/ARC-8 in an aircraft.

I think that the BC-348-P such as yours is the best match for use in
a SCR-287-A, since the tube lineup is more contemporary with
that of the BC-375.  I'd like to say the same thing about the
BC-348-Q and the T-47A/ART-13.  It has the most modern tube
lineup, but I'm pretty convinced that the real reason for the
J, N, and Q models was their being less expensive to make.  The
R model is my favorite, but I respect the whole BC-224/348 design
effort.
