IMO -
There were many reasons not to paint; production speed, initial cost
saving, labor savings; removed weight to save fuel; also note high
attrition rate of the planes. In the European theater the average life
of a fighter pilot ~3 or 4 weeks?, average life of bomber pilots and
planes ~10 missions? Someone will correct my numbers. My basic point
is planes, and equipment, did not last that long in any theater of
war. Anything to speed production and reduce fuel cost was done.
