IMO -
There were many reasons not to paint;  production speed, initial cost 
saving, labor savings; removed weight to save fuel; also note high 
attrition rate of the planes.   In the European theater the average life 
of a fighter pilot ~3 or 4 weeks?, average life of bomber pilots and 
planes ~10 missions?   Someone will correct my numbers.  My basic point 
is planes, and equipment,  did not last that long in any theater of 
war.  Anything to speed production and reduce fuel cost was done.
