The reason the B-18 Bolo was purchased instead of the B-17 was that it only 
required 2 engines. The USAAF could purchase more B-18s than B-17s for the 
same amount of money.

The B-18 Bolo was a bomber version of the DC3/C-47. And they were used for 
submarine patrol. The USAAF version of the PBY.
