Nick/K4NYW has an amazing amout of information and documentation on his
excellent website.
Recently I have been looking at:
http://www.navy-radio.com/manuals/94200/94200_1_05-4.pdf
and
http://www.navy-radio.com/manuals/94200/94200_1_09-2.pdf .
The very last page of the first link has some information about
the USN's model RAJ receiver. The RAJ was made by A.R.C. and is similar
to the RU-3, except that it was designed to be run from 110 vac
(using power unit CBY-20040) or 6 vdc (using dynamotor CBY-21173).
Unfortunately, only the first page of RAJ info is present, so there's
no vacuum tube or contract date info. But the RU-3 contract date is
02-10-34, so likely the RAJ was shortly thereafter. There's a picture
shown of this local-tuned set. It appears that there's a gain control
on the CBY-46046 receiver's front panel! The tuning range is given as
224 to 13575 kc, which is the same as the RU-3. Has anyone on the list
ever heard of an RAJ before? It would be something to add to anyone's
A.R.C. file.
In the middle of the second linked document, there are two pages of info
on the *very first* model of the GF...the one in which even the receiver
is GF (not RU). The transmitter is CBY-52004, and the receiver is
CBY-46006. The contract date is 10 NOV 32. That represents the start
of the series of equipments known as the GF/RU and SCR-*-183/283. A picture
of the almost complete GF set is shown.
These USN publication data sheets are dated 1958. One wonders why early-
to mid-1930s (grossly obsolete) gear was addressed in a 1958 publication.
It's damned interesting information. Thanks, Nick.
Here's my work-in-progress table of GF/RU data, now updated with the
information found on Nick's site. (Dashes mean that no GF transmitter
was associated with the RU. Blanks mean that needed information is
missing):
