If I gave the impression of "hard feelings,"
I sure didn't mean to. I wasn't trying to accuse
you of anything, Larry and I regret if it sounded
that way. I thought that when I got older,
I was supposed to get wiser..... doh!
Anyways, there's a line out there and we all
struggle to find our version of it.
Continuing the example of the Mona Lisa;
If the absolute preservation of Leonardo's
work in its untouched, original state was
the goal, then it would have to be locked away
in an inert gas within a light-proof case
and never handled again. Not only would such
an effort effectively "kill" the piece,
since it would, in a sense, cease to exist,
but the effort would ultimately fail,
since Father Time will eventually defeat
even these measures.
I don't have a problem with putting ol'Mona
in a new frame, or having a competent
restoration project to protect her from
Father Time without having to lock her away.
The restorations aren't the "original" work,
but they are necessary to preserve that work
while keeping her "alive" to people.
By the same logic- I think clipping the
wire to a bad cap or resistor and tacking
a new one in its place, leaving the original
part and wire dress, is legitimate.
Nor do I have much problem with external
"innovations" which may not be "by the book,"
but bring the set to life.
I'd even go as far as an up-coming project,
which will non-destructively crystal control
the TBY with a crystal Hue kindly sent me
years ago and which I'm just getting to.
Others feel no changes at all are justified
and the piece should be "display only."
I can dig that, since it perserves the set.
But my thinking evolved over time;
I certainly hacked and whacked enough
in my youth. Perhaps it will evolve
some more as time goes on.
