Actually the man in the rear seat was the RADIO MAN and doubled as a GUNNER.
But in normal circumstances the only the radioman in the lead aircraft used
the liaison set. The other radiomen only used their liaison radios in a
emergency.
The emergency procedure was to send the SOS three times, send the aircraft
ID three times, and send the position three times. Then close th key and
jump. This was done on the emergency frequency.
