[ARC5] Help with tuning knob ideas for ARC-5 receiver

Hello list,
 
I'm new to the ARC-5, so please excuse my ignorance.
 
I'm using the tuning capacitor and gearing out of a 3-6 mc receiver for the 
 VFO of a homebrew transmitter ("A Sideband Package" article from 1958 QST  
article).  
 
>From what I can surmise (did I mention that I am new to the command sets?), 
 a cable was threaded to the front panel of the receiver which connected to 
the  tuning cap gear to adjust the frequency remotely.  What do I need in 
order  to replace that cable with a regular knob so that I can adjust the  
frequency from the receiver's front panel in a more traditional fashion (non  
remote control fashion)?
