I work a lot of VHF AM, more than any other freq or mode, in fact.  It works great even at low power.  Contacts to 50 miles or better are the norm, with longer ones quite common.  Sometimes you can't get a word in edgewise and just have to key up and talk to get your message through.

Y'all come on up and join us!  My favorite freq is 122.975 MHZ; 122.8 and 122.9 are popular as well.

P.S., No homemade, vintage, or military surplus equipment!
