Wayne,
I never considered whether a frequency xtal would work as a detector,
interesting concept.
The original foxhole radios were made with whatever was available. Coils
wrapped around about anything nonconductive, cereal boxes, wood, etc.
Capacitors were made from foil and whatever was nonconductive, e.g. paper.
Detectors were pieces of galena (i.e."cat wiskers"), razor blades, etc. As a
kid growing up in Pittsburgh, I made several of these, and they actually
worked. Of course, about the only thing they'd pick up is clear channel KDKA.
As a source for information, check old Boy Scout books. Seemed that's
where I got my plans.
