Yes and yes.  Boron was hauled out of the Death Valley using the 20  mules 
teams to the trains in Barstow.  Their route is now on the Ft. Irwin  army 
base.  I trained there often and there are signs of those old mule  trains 
all over the place, graves, graffiti, etc.
