I've wondered that many times too, and I'm pretty sure the station 
included an SX-42 and one of the Gonset Communicators (aka "Gooney 
Bird").   Both would have been correct for the period 1951-59, but I 
haven't been able to find proof other than one grainy B&W screen cap 
that shows Mitch the sheriff in front of an SX-42 with one of the early 
Motorola portables with the telephone type handset sitting on top.  But 
I'm not sure if this was at the sheriff's office or the living room of 
the Flying Crown Ranch.
