I got started with an old push button Philco console that my dad got
at an auction for $3, missing a couple tubes. Only difference, it was
the early/mid 1970s! Listening to the AMers on 75 and 40 meters along
with aircraft and other interesting stuff really set the hook.
FYI for those interested, there's a powerhouse station on 740 AM out
of Toronto that still plays some of these old shows and big band
music. Fibber MaGee and Molly is one, there's also another called
Vanishing point or something like that. Couple others too, including
the Shadow. I was listening with a Zenith 12-S-232 next to the bed but
swapped it out with an old Super Pro SP-100 until I have time to recap
the Zenith.
BTW, at least some of those old programs were on large vinyl discs.
I've got some Shadow programs that have got be 18-20 inches, on
transparent red vinyl.
