Dec. 7, 1941. I was eight years old. The family was upstairs but I had 
the mumps and was in bed. Seems to me it was about 1 p.m. that Sunday  
when they interrupted whatever I was listening to to tell us Pearl 
Harbor had been attacked by Japan. I went down stairs (being a junior 
reporter even then) and told everybody what had happened. I do think I 
knew, even then, that Pearl Harbor was a Navy base in Hawaii, but then, 
my parents were very international-minded. Mom went around the world, 
including stops in Honolulu, Java (where her brother was a Socony 
engineer), Japan, etc. by herself on a tramp steamer. before marrying 
Dad in 1930. The next day Dad went down and volunteered for the fire 
department, being too old for the draft.
