My first home entertainment type SW receiver was a prewar model my father
salvaged for me. It was a chassis without cabinet, may have been a
Zenith -- had a circular yellow/tan-colored dial. I lived in NYC then, and
could hear Australia almost daily as well as many other overseas
broadcasts - but the set was defective with some kind of warbling
signal-blocking overload. I was only about 10-11 then, and didn't know much
about fixing radios. I used the set to qualify for a Boy's Life Short Wave
Listeners diploma. (I have the diploma qualifying form somewhere and I think
it includes the radio model -- I know it contains a log of the stations I
heard.)
The set certainly was neither sensitive nor selective, but I was still
fascinated with the stations I could hear - including AM ham stations and CW
"piff-puff puff" (no bfo,of course).
