FWIW:
On the WWII bombing missions over Germany only the radio operator was
required to monitor the liaison set. He was responsible for all traffic
between the group and England.
Most of the other operators never transmitted on the liaison transmitter
unless the aircraft was going down. Then he sent the SOS with aircraft
number and best known position just before he jumped. He did not wait for an
acknowagment!
My Elmer in 1957 was one of the radio operators.
