We must differentiate here between Zinc Chromate primer, a coating sort of
like paint, and Chromate conversion corrosion proofing, a dip in a
specific mix of chemicals which produces a film of converted aluminum on
the surface of the metal. The latter is often referred to as Alodine, or
Iridite, both trademarked processes. Google either of these terms for
process details.

Zinc Chromate can be applied as any paint is applied; dip, spray, or
brush, while Alodine is a dip process. I don't think I've ever heard of
sprayed Alodine, although it should be possible, and inefficient use of
materials.

Anodizing is yet another process not covered here.

The zinc chromite is a dip process and the color varies widely depending
on the material, the strength and age of the dip, and how long it is
immersed. I was a government QAR at Williams Int where they made the
cruise missile engines and the process was used extensively on aluminum
parts. The color isn't important just the protection of the base material.
