I think that would be a great idea.  The ID of the ring at the bottom 
that slides over the tube is 0.990" if you wanted to look for some 
pipe.  I wonder what Lowe's would say to a request for a lineal inch of 
it... :-)

That would certainly be advisable - especially if one wished to use it 
with glass tubes, John.  The original design was *only* for metal 
receiving tubes, and it is possible to develop some appreciable 
pressures halfway down the beam at the tong contact points because of 
leverage.  Moreover, the tongs themselves are fairly heavy .188" steel, 
so delicate control of the pressure is a bit tough to judge.  At least 
it does a fine job with metal tubes.
