"DAY-44" plus the four or five digits preceding it, is the Signal Corps 
Order Number.  "DAY" means Dayton (Ohio) Procurement District (or Depot).  "44" 
means Fiscal Year 1944 (between 01 July 1943 and 30 June 1944).
