Another article that rehashes much of the same info adds:

"Prior to the activities on Lake Michigan, this particular Hellcat
served with Fighter Squadron VF-38 at Guadalcanal in 1943."

Looks like as they replaced damaged or war-weary aircraft with new
models, the old ones were sent back for training purposes.

It certainly backs up the training configurations you mentioned earlier, Mike.
