John:
The F6F was a single-seat fighter-plane, the Grumman "Hellcat". Usually, in
a water landing such as was involved here, the pilot got out....but not always.
As I remember it, in this particular case, we were told earlier that this
particular plane was involved in a somewhat "exciting" landing, was caught by
its tail-hook, dangled over the side of the aircraft carrier until the pilot was
rescued, then the plane was simply cut loose and dropped into the water to
clear the deck. Apparently it was also damaged in the landing accident.
In this case the pilot got out OK.
BTW, the F6F was a very capable aircraft, its operation resulting in the
creation of more "Aces" than any other U.S. fighter aircraft of WWII.
