I was wondering about that when you mentioned cleaning the sand or mud
out. Michigan was the site of a couple training carriers during WWII
and quite a number of aircraft ended up in the drink as a result. Some
group whose name escapes me has been retrieving them since the 90s I
believe and sending them off to museums. Perhaps that's where yours
came from?
One of the aircraft recovered, a SBD, hangs in Midway airport near a
number of great photo and video displays about the Battle of Midway as
well as the training on Lake Michigan. Also some good explanations of
the people involved from pilots to Admirals.
An excellent way to kill some time if you have a layover at Chicago Midway.
