I'm going to guess you've been missing the Dale, KW1I, Tom W2ILA,along
with Brown and the other guys in the milsurplus area then. I've bought
a number of things from them over the years and have seen even more
interesting stuff I didn't buy. Some of the things purchased include a
NOS C-43 control box and Hallicrafters R-649 Coast Guard receiver.
George Rancourt K1ANX always has some interesting mil gear from R-390s
to Russian or German gear. Got a beautiful RCH from him at Hopkinton
for $125. He had a couple TCS sets sitting beside it.
At Hosstraders I also found things like ARA receivers in clean shape,
R-390A meters and knobs, watched a buddy of mine (W1RC, now head of
NEAR-Fest) buy a CY-979A cabinet sans shockmounts for $5 from under a
table. Even found a rounds counter out of a WWII fighter one time
which a former girlfriend ended up with. There are goodies like GRR-5
receivers and accessories. dealers selling complete aerial systems,
the list just goes on and on. A beautiful Halli SX-73/R-274 there in
May sold for $400. Last year I found an original cabinet for the
Hammarlund version - the SP-600 - for $20. At the second or third
NEAR-Fest I sold one of my ART-13s and a ARR-8B or C along with a few
other goodies. Replaced the ART-13 with that like-new ATC from Maine
that had shown up there and at Hopkinton previously.
So either it's your approach or perhaps type of gear you're looking
for. You may consider everything I've listed above as not
'worthwhile', which is fine. We're all looking for different things
which keeps it interesting. Sometimes you need to get under the tables
and look through the boxes and piles to find the treasures. I've found
that making a quick trip through the place upon arrival without
stopping to lolligag is a good start.
