I haven't checked the specifics here in NC recently, didn't even
realize it had leaned into the blue column because the taxes are so
much cheaper than VT (roughly 1/3rd). When I left there, VT had been
carrying the highest tax burden of all states for a number of years.
Not the highest taxes, but largest percentage of income going to pay
them. Definitely cuts into the radio money. And we used to laugh at
Massachusetts!  When you add in the higher cost of living, heating for
an extended winter season and a new bride from the south, it became a
losing proposition fast.

Of course, the trick in moving to another, more reasonable state is to
make sure not to vote for the kind of people and policies that ruined
the last place. The invasion of VT by the city folks from MA, CT, NY,
NJ and so on is what turned it into such a miserable place to live.
They brought the failed policies with them. So I figured they can pay
for the mess, they don't need my help. (o:
