The only problem with that story is that the General's name was Von Kluge,
pronounced clue-ga. No letter d in the name.

The word "kludge" was created in WWII.
German general Von Kludge was know for innovation. If he need infantry and
all he had was cook, they became infantry.
Our WWII GIs created the phrase "it's a kludge".

AFAIK, the original was a German printing press made by a company of that
name. It was certainly a common derogatory description of an inelegant
technical solution in 1960.
