I have also read that the Germans in Africa with Rommel
used frequencies within or very close to the 10 and 11
meter ham bands.
Supposedly, some ham in one of the Eastern seaboard
states regularly heard the Germans' communications, and
called the FBI, thinking it might be here in the states.
The FBI, after listening for a very short time, practically
commandeered his home and station and set up a major
listening post there.
They had translators, etc. and passed immediately on to
our forces in Africa what they heard.
I read this many years ago, and no longer know the source,
but the story was quite detailed.
