I once helped a Forward Air Controller vets group build their "early" and
"late"
versions of their FAC jeeps. The early version used an SCR-287
and two SCR-522s. The late version used AN/ARC-8 and two
AN/ARC-3s. They gave me one of their commemorative books. :)

I can't speak for the L-4, but I have all the erection and
maint. manuals for the L-5, which was a contemporary.
The 6-Volt version was speced for RCA AVT-15 / AVR-20.
The 12-Volt version was speced for RCA AVT-112 / AVR-20
The 24-volt version was speced for SCR-274N.
None were speced for any VHF radio, but several VHF sets
were "jimmyed" into the aircraft so they could talk to the
rapidly-advancing mechanized units. This sort of "on the fly"
was common all over the place- not just in aircraft, which is why
it's a mistake to say "they never did this" or "they always did that."
Somewhere in my boxes of stuff are documents of both SCR-274N
and SCR-287 installed in large rescue boats launched to
recovered downed airmen. IIRC, these were Pacific-based.
None of these documents mention any VHF equipment in the boats.
