The grey wrinkle was applied to the post war civilian equipment - Type
12 and its relatives. I've come across a few late units with a smooth
grey finish but I don't know if that was factory or someone else's
work. Even later A.R.C. equipment (after Cessna bought them) came out
in satin black and I think a few black wrinkle. There was at least
one series (1000 series?) built to look like Collins equipment but it
failed miserably in performance.
As Robert mentioned, some AN/ARC-5 equipment wound up getting
repainted grey at some point in their life along with other formerly
black wrinkle equipment. I have an LM that suffered the same fate.
