No unpainted ARA receivers were made to the best of my knowledge
(Please note that phrase, everyone!) but ARA/ATA components were built
as late as 1943 for replacement purposes.  Someone probably put the
dial inside just for a way to keep track of where it it - something
I'd do, actually.

The Navy was pretty dedicated to black wrinkle paint through the war
with only a few exceptions like the VHF AN/ARC-5 Rx & Tx and I suspect
they would have preferred black wrinkle there as well.  (Which makes
me wonder why they didn't have WE paint them ... )
