Dave is right; purchasing power relies and lots of factors besides inflation.

I found this interesting site www.measuringworth.org where you an input multiple factors to calculate pricing index.

Our index has been getting worse since the 1970's:

I believe inflation numbers to be a "red herring;" 
you're just moving the decimal place.  
No one talks about the figure that really matters:
Purchasing power per hour of your labor.
That has taken a serious hit, just in the last 10 years
