Note that most serious (i.e., non-consumer) electronics equipment in  
the 30's was painted black wrinkle so natural that the military stuff  
would be finished the same way.  In the wartime rush it was soon  
obvious that painting could be dispensed with in many/most cases so it  
was.  Didn't seem to happen with Navy radios, though.  Tradition more  
important there maybe?  Anyway, remember reading somewhere that the  
use of wrinkle paint came to an end following the Bikini tests when it  
was found to be almost impossible to decontaminate.
