From "Tube Lore" by Ludwell Sibley

The metal tube was announced by RCA and GE in 1934. The original line
included the 5Z4, 6A8, 6L7, 6C5, 6F5, 6F6, 6H6, 6J7 & 6K7.
Used a metal shell with individual glass-filled eyelets for the lead
in wires. Quickly followed by a short-lived competing metal -glass
(MG) design by Arcturus and Triad where a small conventional stem-
sealed glass tube was hidden inside a steel shell. To overcome the
high cost of the metal
eyelet base a button stem was put into use in 1936. In this design
the glass stem disk was sealed into the bottom of the metal envelope.

Except the short lived MG type mentioned above, the metal tube does
not have a glass tube inside. Have taken many apart and can attest to
this as well.
