I would use pop rivets too, and at AircraftSpruce.com you can order some that are smaller than the 1/8 inch size you find at hardware stores, like 3/32 in. Those are good for nutplates.
And they have other Cherrymax style blind rivets that, unlike the hardware store rivets, plug the hole in the middle.
Finally, there are the copper rivets that are used to attach brake linings to the pads and shoes. They are hollow rivets and probably could be set adequately for nameplates with a C-Clamp. Dimpling the head to produce the required effect should be fairly easy, too.
