Some years back we had a nice sermon from Father Paul about "the Jesus Nut". This is the big nut that holds the rotor on the drive shaft of a helicoptr.(take this with a Big grain of Salt). This is the one important thing keeping the whole affair together, thus the religious aspect of Jesus keeping us all on the path, so to speak.
My observation on reflecting on this sermon was that the last words spoken were: "Jesus @#$%^&!*&)($)# /?..... " when the damn nut came off.
Hopefully no one thinks I'm being disrespectful of folks who are religious, but also keep in mind that when helicopters fail in flight, it's likely there will be few survivors. Many of our "boys", and civilians too, have lost there lives in helicopter crashes and it must be terrifying to the last moment.
Yet helicopters are used throughout the world for transport, military, fire fighting, police, and sport and they should have some repect for the servicices they perform.Heck, one of the stars of *MASH* were the helo's bringing in the wounded.
I flew on a commuter twin rotor craft from Teeterboro NJ to the Marine Air Terminal on Long Island NY back in 1973 and it was my first vertical take off. Quite amazing; we flew over to Long Island by way of Brooklyn Heights, and I could even see where my sister and brother in law lived as we were slow and low.The aircraft vibrated at every possible frequency and every possible harmonic. Now that I know about the Jesus Nut, and this one had two, I will never go in a helicopter again unless I am being rescued for doing something even stupider.
My $.02
Jay

Shortly thereafter while I was on Naval Reserve cruise at Barber's Point,
HI, an Sikorsky S-58 crashed in Chicago due to blade failure.
I live at Barber's Point now (across from where the commissary used to be,
f you remember that) and the Coast Guard has a station at the ocean end of
he field. It's their helicopter that I hear on a daily basis that sounds
ike it has a gear box trying very hard to become very little bitzenpieces.
