A friend of mine was in the USAAF late in WWII. He said that he and another airman were at a base just after the war where they watched one of the early helicopters take off. The other guy turned to him and said "I would not be too scared to fly in one of those things but I sure would be too embarrassed."

My friend also says that whenever you see a helicopter take off the first thing it does is turn around. That is so the pilot can see if anyone is watching him.
